What are Sight Words?
Sight words are like a special list of words that teachers often use when they’re helping kids learn to read. The idea is to show you some of the words that pop up most often in books. If you can learn to remember these words and know them “by sight” – without having to sound them out every time – it can really help you read more smoothly and understand what you’re reading better.
These words are now often called Dolch Sight Words. That’s because a teacher named Dr. Edward William Dolch figured out something cool way back in the 1930s! He looked at lots and lots of books for kids and noticed some words kept showing up again and again.
Then, in 1948, in his book called “Problems in Reading,” Dr. Dolch shared his famous list of 220 sight words. He also made another list of 95 nouns (those are words for people, places, and things!) that kids see a lot. The goal was to help kids learn these words by heart so they could spot them easily in their books and understand the stories better!
